space delimited files

Using MS Excel '97 the space delimited file format
(*.prn) worked correctly. With Excel 2000 however the
same file format inserts arbitrary spaces between the
columns. Has anyone else epxerienced this? More
importantly however is there a fix (ie, something
required to the registry or something?)....

Any assistance appreciated.
