spaces between letters

When we create a document using "justify" formatting, we
are getting spaces between letters as well as words. I can
understand spacing words, but is spaces between letters
normal? If not, any ideas why it's doing that?
We are printing to an HPLJ 2100 using Word XP.

This usually turns out to be a problem with the printer driver.

Word uses complex algorythms to adjust spacing between
words and letters to get the nice neat edge on the right.
All word processing programs do for that matter. Because
the look can vary from printer to printer and reader to
reader, many opt to use left justification.
