spaces suddenly stop working in Word X?

Hello-

I'm doing some troubleshooting for a friend. She's using Office v.X
on an iMac running 10.2.7. Sorry I don't have more details ... she
reported this to me by phone and isn't very tech-savvy.

She was using Word when it crashed on her (not terribly unusual in
itself, I guess.) When she restarted Word and opened that document
again, the space bar would not create a space in the document. She
restarted her whole computer and went back to that same document --
still couldn't make spaces. The space bar in other applications seems
to work fine. Has anyone ever encountered any problems like this
before?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Jim. I will be going over to her house tomorrow to help her
with it so I will let you know if this helped.

She just bought this software less than a month ago. Shouldn't it
already include all these updates? Or is MS still shipping 10.0.0
versions on CD?

Even Apple does not ship with the latest updates. You should always check
for updates when you install.

True, but the 10.1.2 updater is almost a year old at this point. How
can I tell what updaters are appropriate for her installation? A
quick look at my Office apps (which have been fully updated) reveals
that some are at version 10.1.4 and some at 10.1.5. Entourage isn't
really relevant here, as Word and Excel are all she ever uses.

If, for instance, the version she has already includes the 10.1.2
update, would it hurt anything to use the 10.1.2 update installer? I
figure it'd be better safe than sorry to start with the oldest
updates, but I don't want to screw anything up more than it already is
screwed up.

The 10.1.5 updater updates the Microsoft Component Plugin. One can make sure
that this update has been applied by checking the version number using File>
Get Info of the following file:

Office 10.1.5 Update. This update addresses several stability issues with
PowerPoint®, Excel, and Visual Basic for Applications for Office v. X.

This shows exactly what version number for each application after applying
the updaters.
