Spacing gone haywire

I think this is simple, but I don't know the simple answer.

I'm using Word 2003 and everything has been fine for a long time. I
must have hit some keys accidentally, but this is my problem:

My spacing seems really suspect; the most obvious problem is that when
I create an em dash, it displays onscreen with part of the dash through
the letters preceding the dash; i.e., if if write the word 'dash' and
follow it with an em dash, some of the dash will be sticking through
the 's' and 'h' of dash.

How do I fix it?
