Spam in Guestbook

Marie

I am searching for answers to stop getting spam in my guestbook. I have read
all the questions and answers but they are dated 4 years ago. As this is 2008
surely someone has an updated file that can be added to the guestbook
tempplate to stop the spam. I am using Frontpage cause I found I don't need
to know much about web design to use it and had no problems in designing a
family site but I can't understand all the stuff I am reading on capture or
asp etc. Thanks

The FrontPage guestbook is actually over 10 years old, being virtually
unchanged since FrontPage 98. There is very, very little that can be
done to stop spammers.
About the most effective action (apart from using custom server side
scripting) is to change the page name, and the name of the guestlog.htm
file, and change again every month or so.

Some ideas on stopping spam are at
http://www.rxs-enterprises.org/tests/anti-spam/ but to be effective
these all require server side scripting (asp, php, asp.net etc, whatever
your host supports). Client side (Javascript) solutions, including
FrontPage validation, will not work with spammers because they will
always have JavaScript turned off.

There are many, many posts regarding this same issue that are much more
recent than four years ago. There is no *updated* file that can be added to
the guest book. The FP guest book hasn't changed since it was introduced
years ago.

If you are unable to grasp asp or captcha, you need to search for a third
party guest book that will fit your needs.

Thanks I have renamed my pages so hopefully that will work. If not I have told my family there will be no more family website cause I am over it will with all the spam that is happening. I am sure someone could earn heaps by re-writing frontpages guestbook to protect it. Thanks again.

Marie,

The FrontPage guestbook uses the Front Page Server Extensions for its
functionality. The latest version of these extensions are from 2002, and the
only updates that are being done are (system) security updates.
The best way to prevent spam of the guestbook is still going to be custom
scripting. This may be done through the various methods that have been
described before, such as CAPTCHA.
If you want to send me an email, to 'Forums at LFD.LannonFire.com' with the
URL of the website, I can see if one of the scripts I have in my library may
work for you
