Spam virus messages

Peter Ennis

Since posting a question to this newsgroup my hotmail account has been
stuffed with messages from these virus spamming b*****ds. Possibly a dumb
question, but any ideas how to stop them, without killing all mail to my
account?

The swen worm harvests email addresses from newsgroup posts. When
you post, put in a spam-trap (like (e-mail address removed)), or,
like I've done here, use ROT-13

Would you explain what

"a spam-trap (like (e-mail address removed)), or,
like I've done here, use ROT-13"

and what to do with
(e-mail address removed)), or
ROT-13" ?

Once the swen worm has grabbed your address, can you do anything to
eliminate the problem? Entourage sends the messages to my delete box
as Junk, and I delete them manually (without opening them), but I'm
receiving them at a rate of 50 or more per day.

I called Compuserve and they asked me who the e-mails were coming
from. Well, I'm not going to open them, and I doubt I'd find a real
source anyway, so that was no help.

I ran Norton AntiVirus, and it doesn't detect anything.

Any suggestions?

Take a look here:

http://www.mcgimpsey.com/excel/groupspam.html

Be assured that the amount should drop after you no longer post with
your real address - I'm down to <1000 per day now. At the peak, I
got over 8000 per day, but a large part of that was my domain being
spoofed.

Hi Cathy:

No.

You're getting off lightly: I peak at 600 a day on some days.

In Entourage, go to Tools>Accounts and double-click your account. Enable
"Allow online access."

You then get a folder in the folder list that enables you to look into your
mail server without downloading anything.

Select all and control-click the broken envelope. You will get an option to
"Delete from server at next connection." Choose that.

(Note, due to a bug, if any of the headers you have selected are NOT left on
the server, the option will not appear. Command-click the missing one to
deselect it and try again).

Now select your Inbox and then click Send/Receive.

Entourage will update your message list and your email server will delete
all the viruses without you having to download any of them.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your info. I read your article, and I'm still a little
confused. I don't use a newsreader (at least not to my knowledge). I
am accessing this group through Internet Explorer.

I do get one digest from another newsgroup. It is delivered to my
Entourage mailbox.

Should I set up a different account with Google Groups using the No
Spam address? Will Google recognize it as a legitimate address, or
doesn't it care?

B

Beth Rosengard

Hi Cathie,

It's a lot easier to read newsgroups via a newsreader than a browser. And
since you can use Entourage as a newsreader, why don't you try it? (The
digest you mention doesn't come from a newsgroup, by the way, it's from a
mailing list which is something else: You have to go to the newsgroup in
order to see what's been posted; with mailing lists, the posts come in to
you like regular email).

J.E. and some others don't find Entourage's newsgroup reading functions
sophisticated enough, but then they're avid newsgroup readers and like to be
able to manipulate the information in arcane ways (I'm going to get blasted
in a minute :). But I find Entourage perfectly acceptable for newsreading
and I save Google for searching newsgroup archives.

You can access all the Microsoft newsgroups via the Microsoft News Server.
Other newsgroups can usually be accessed via your ISP's news server (and I
would imagine that Compuserve must offer one).

You should by default have the Microsoft News Server icon already at or near
the bottom of your folder list in Entourage. Click on it and you'll be
asked if you want to download the newsgroups. Say yes. A long list of
newsgroup names will appear in your Preview Pane. In the upper right corner
of the window, there's a Quick Search box which says "Display newsgroups
containing". Type in "mac.office" (or just "mac" if you want to see all of
them) and you'll see the five newsgroups pertaining to MacOffice.

Select the Word newsgroup (and any others that interest you) and click on
Subscribe. The newsgroup name will now be in bold and it will also have
appeared below the Microsoft News Server icon in the folder list. When you
want to read that newsgroup, just click on it and it will open and download
headers. (You can set the number of headers downloaded in Tools> Accounts>
News> {that account}> Options.) Click on any header that you want and the
message will be displayed. It's just like reading email and you don't have
to use Internet Explorer (or any other browser).

You'll find a lot more about using Entourage as your newsreader (and other
info about Entourage) here
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/toc.html#newsgroups> and at the Entourage URL
in my signature. Try it. You'll like it :). If you have any questions
about this, either come back here for now or go to the
microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage newsgroup.

As to your questions about Google, yes I'm sure you'll have to set up a new
account using the bogus email address and no Google won't care. Half the
people posting on newsgroups via Google are using munged addresses.

Hope this helps.

Well, it took longer than a minute, but...<g>

ARCANE?!?!?

You mean like ... oh heck, I've voiced my opinion many too many
times already. OK, just one: *thread by reference*!!!

Take a look at MT-Newswatcher if you want to see a really useful
newsreader, or its commercial cousin, Thoth. Corentin likes MacSoup
- I've never liked it as much as the newswatcher apps, but it's much
more capable than Erage.

I tried Erage for the m.p.mac.office* groups for more than a year.
It's certainly capable if you're only interested in occasional
browsing of the groups. Some people (like Beth) can use it
effectively for intense newsgroup work. I can't.

Still standing, Beth?? <vbg>

Hi Beth

What is Entourage?
Browser?
Email program like Outlook Express?
For Mac
For OS 9.2.2?

Thanks, Rafael Mac OS 9.2.2

Beth Rosengard

Hi Rafael,

Entourage is the most current Microsoft email client for Mac. It has been
called "Outlook Express on steroids" :), in part because it contains
extensive PIM capabilities (Personal Information Management). It comes as
part of Office 2001 and Office X (and as a stand-alone for X). You can use
Office/Entourage 2001 with OS 9.x so if you upgrade to Office 2001, you'll
have it, plus a lot of newer features in the other Office apps. Of course,
if your computer can handle it, you could also upgrade to OS X/Office X.

Entourage is IE's For pay Replacement of Outlook Express. It also has
extensive Addressbook capabilities and some other features.
I've tried it through Office2001 and never could get warmed up to its
newsgroup handling.

I much prefer the all -in-one approach of Netscape Communicator/Netscape 7/Mozilla.

Hi Rafael,

I guess you finally got it working. Congratulations! One thing though:
For future reference, there are newsgroups specifically for testing. You
can search on the word "test" to find them all, but one of them is
microsoft.public.test. If your posts make it to the test group on the
Microsoft news server, then they'll make it to any other group as well.

Does Entourage do ROT-13? I don't see a setting for it anywhere.
