Spamming?

S

Steve Squires

I too have been suffering the same symptoms with outgoing email and while increasing the time-out does get the mail to go (eventually) I believe that is only treating the symptom not the problem.

Our mail server seems to have been compromised in some way as some accounts have been sending spam to themselves (according to the logs) so I feel the cause is more likely a denial of service (i.e. sending emails) because the server is tied up sending spam.

The mail server is an old (6-7 years) Linux box and I know nothing about Linux.

Any idiot guide level sugesstions on how to check out my theory would be greatfully received.

I would see this error, when I tried to send an email in Outlook 2003 ro 2007 that had even a small (3 Mb) attachment. The error indicates that the process timed out waiting for the SMTP server to respond.

First of all, like most Microsoft error messages, this one is totally misleading. After hours on the telephone I learned that there was no problem with my email server responding. The "timeout" involves only Outlook.

There are also many companies on the Internet that will tell you that the problem results from trash in your Windows Registry. They allow a registry cleaner to be downloaded for free, than scan for the trash, find it, and then offer to clean it up for $40 or so. I found that these also did not fix my problem.

The problem turned out to just be caused by the timeout for Outlook being set too low for the time it takes to email a large file. By going to Outlook>Tools>Options>Email Accounts, and then going through the process of MANUALLY setting up your email account again (delete the old one), you will find a window with a button near the bottom that says "More Settings". Clicking that will allow you to set the timeout setting up to 10 minutes. This totally solved my problem in both Outlook 2003 and 2007.

Good luck,

Ron

You want an "idiot level" guide to Linux, and you are asking in a Microsoft
newsgroup?

First "idiot level" piece of advice: Ditch the "EggheadCafe" forum. It isn't
what you think it is, and it has one of the poorest HTTP-to-NNTP
applications I have ever encountered. I strongly recommend you point your
news client to a newsgroup about Linux. There are a number. Sign up with a
news service provider, and ask in, 'alt.comp.linux'.

very unlikely the Linux mail server has been compromised - more likely one
of the Windows machines connecting to it has got a bot or a Trojan or some
other piece of nasty software on it...

Are the accounts actually sending the mail? If so, then the server might
have been compromised, but its more likely just a spammer trying to get the
message delivered - Spammers will fake the From address in hopes it gets
past the spam filters better. Unfortunately, if your server disallows mail
to or from your own addresses or your spam filter bounces the spam, you get
the NDA.
