span tag added by Front Page

Have any of you experienced Front Page adding the tag sequence <span
lang="en-us"><span> to an html page that you have edited? This was
automatically added each time I made a modification to the text; the span
tags don't enclose anything. This happens intermittently.
The file has always been written in English. I am in the US, but other
co-workers are in Europe. In the page Properties, the Language tab, the page
language is set to <none> and the HTML encoding is set to save the document
as US/Western European (Windows).
