Select a character such as é and observe the status bar of
the Character Map that displays the keyboard characters
that can be used to display the character for that font set.
Note the ALT+0233 for example where the 0233 is entered
using the numeric keypad on the keyboard.

Some additional details:

The "squiggle" is called a tilde.

You can copy and paste characters from the character map, although that
may not be practical if you need more than one of two of them.

The code for small letter n with tilde is Alt-0241.

When entering an alt-number sequence, the numbers have to be typed on the
numeric keypad. You may need to have NumLock turned on for Excel to
recognize the sequence.

Some more addtional details:

This subject of discussion refers to "diacritical marks" which
should be researched via Google so as to learn the correct
names of the marks and visually observe their representation.

Be aware that some font sets do not support complete sets of
diacritical marks for various language requirements. Remain aware
that end-users will often personalize their documents by selecting
stylized font sets. If such a stylized font set does not support the
diacritical marks which is very common the letters in words that
require diacritical marks will not be displayed. There are methods
that system administrators may use to remove or prevent the use
of certain font sets if neccessary but once the document leaves the
organization that control is lost unless of course the document is
sent in a format such as .pdf.

At one time I was writing frequently using both English and Español.
I needed quick review of the diacritical marks pertinent to Español
Using the Character Map as a reference, I then used a paint program
text tools to create a small image to map the marks...

é = ALT0233
ñ = ALT0241
....
....

The background color of the image should be the same as the color
of the desktop. Save the image as a bitmap and use Display
Properties to display the bitmap as a Desktop Background configured
to display in the center of the Desktop.

Unfortunately the Windows OS requires .bmp files which do not support
transparency so the image background may not blend into the color of
the Desktop on some machines.

To efficiently use the image as a reference tool learn and use the
following keyboard shortcuts:

Windows Logo + M (minimize all open windows)
Shift + Windows Logo + M (restore all minimzed windows)

The use of the image as a reference tool is much more efficient
than constant trips to the Character Map. Using the keyboard
shortcuts provides 'instant access' to the reference tool. If designed
creatively the display of the tool in the center of the Desktop should
not be perceived as intrusive and can always be enabled or disabled
on demand via the Desktop Properties.
