The Spanish language spell checker should be installed with Visio Pro 2003
by default. When text is entered in shapes / text boxes in Visio 2003 and
2007, there is a default language ID assigned to each object.
To see this in an existing drawing:
Select a shape that has text
Right-click and choose Format > Text
You will see the "Language" field, which is probably set to "English"
Change the Language to one of the "Spanish" options (there are several
reflecting different regional differences).
Click OK to save the setting.
Ensure that the text in the shape is in Spanish but misspelled, and start the Spell Checker
you should see the normal prompt showing Spanish language words to correct
your text.
So any existing drawings which were created with the English language
setting should be changed to the Spanish language setting, which you can do
page by page by selecting all shapes and formatting the text. You may also
need to select sub-shapes if you have grouped items, by the way. This is
actually not to difficult to automate with VBA, I would think.
Going forward - you will want to set the defaults in your drawing so that
Visio can store the information properly and spell check correctly all the
time. You can change the language settings that Office and Visio 2003 use
by default using these steps:
Close all Office applications
From the Start menu, go to All Programs, then Microsoft Office, then
Microsoft Office Tools, and select "Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings"
On the Enabled Languages tab, ensure that Spanish is listed under Enabled
Languages. You can also enable other languages using this panel.
Select the drop-down "Choose the language that defines default behavior
in Microsoft Office applications", and choose Spanish.
--- Note that Visio 2003 and Office 2003 share these settings, so this
will impact all of your Office 2003 applications as well as Visio.
Click OK to save and close. You will see a warning about the potential
loss of customizations in Word and PowerPoint, etc.
-- If you have customizations that you want to retain, CANCEL and back up
your Word and PPT templates before continuing, or they will be lost.
You will see a note about the changes taking effect the next time you
close/launch the Office applications. Click OK and you are done.
Launch Visio and create a new drawing from your desired template.
Create a text box or drag a shape to the page.
Right-click on the shape/text box and select Format > Text, and observe
the Language setting.
It should match the selection you made in the Office Language Settings
tool
If you always want to create Visio drawings and Office documents using the
Spanish spell checker, you should be in good shape after doing this change
once. Some users prefers to leave their settings in English or Spanish, and
change individual shapes/documents as needed.
Hope that helps!
