"Speak Text" issue

Since I've installed Word 2004 on my new MacBook Pro, when I highlight text and go to "Speak Text", the voice pauses for 10 seconds or so between each sentence and paragraph, which never happened before. Is there a setting I can adjust to make it read without these pauses as it used to do?

That's an operating system service.

The settings are in System Preferences. Check the Apple Help for details.
