Special Characters Disappeared

I am using Publisher 2003. Today, some of my special characters are no longer
visible on the screen. I can see hard paragraph breaks and the dots that
represent spaces. But for some reason my tab characters and soft paragraph
breaks don't show up any more.

In Word, you click on "tools", then "options", then "view" to select which
special characters to display on the screen. There is no "view" page in
Publisher. Can someone help me find my special characters again?

Yes, actually, I did try that and it failed. There was a file that it
couldn't find (and unfortunately, my CDs weren't immediately available). But,
as of this morning the characters have mysteriously returned, so I guess my
problem is solved! Thanks for your response!!
