special characters

My wife and daughter both have MS Office Small Busines. When my
daughter downloads a Word document from the local Community College
the math symbols such as the greek letter "epsilon" display properly,
as they do on mY laptop. But on my wife's PC some of the symbols are
garbage. What settings on her PC are wrong?
