Special Effects for Form Controls

I am having trouble applying special effects such as
sunken or raised to text box and combo box controls in the
forms of an Access 2003 database. The control seems to
accept the change- either through the Special Effect tool
on the Formatting toolbar or through the Special Effect
attribute of the Properties window- but the control does
not display the effect. Has anyone else encountered this?
