Special (international) characters

I have an old laptop with Win95 & Word97 installed.
It had been programmed (not by me) to automatically type ( é )by pressing
the ctrl+e keys.

Without programming it's necessary to type ctrl+' (letter) to get the
Apostrophe.

I have a computer with WinXP and would like to program Windows/Word to do
the same thing.

Anyone have a clue on how to do this?

Any info regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

Thx.

There's more than one way to do it, but this would be my preference:

1. Look in Insert/Symbol, the "(normal text)" entry. Find that symbol.

2. Click on the Shortcut Key button

3. This is where you can assign a shortcut key to the character. Make sure
the cursor is in the "Press new shortcut key" box, then press Ctrl+E. Note
that it is probably already assigned to center align paragraphs. Click the
Assign key to change the assignment to the symbol.

.... or, if you're from the US (just guessing from the nyc domain name),
maybe change to an International keyboard.
This has lots of AltGr combos for characters like é (AltGr+e).
