Special Page Numbers

C

Carl Crawford

An instuctor is asking me to do a paper where the top
margin for the text is 1", however each page is to be
numbered 1/2 from the top with the number preceeded by my
name. How can I set up the page number in the right spot
with the text also starting in the proper spot.

Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me a tip.

Carl,

Click File-> Page Setup-> Margins tab. Enter 1" in the
Top Margin box and 0.5 in the Header box.

(But if you haven't ever been this dialog before, those
values will already be set -- they're the defaults.)

Click OK to return to the document window. Now click
View-> Header/Footer. You'll be in the header box.
Press CTRL+E to center the cursor. Type your name
(then a space and a hyphen and a space, I'd guess),
then CTRL+SHIFT+P to insert the page number field.

Click the CLOSE button on the Header/Footer toolbar
to return to the document window. Save.

I'd be inclined to Ctrl+R rather than Ctrl+E, since this type of format
usually puts the page number in the upper right corner. (And I didn't know
that Ctrl+Shift+P would give you a page field because on my machine it
launches Publisher. But the Insert Page Number [#] button works great!)

I was going to say there was nothing wrong with your answer but decided to
do some research first, and I see it is Alt+Shift+P that inserts a { PAGE }
field. That's useful for inserting it in the document (when the Header and
Footer toolbar is not displayed)--I'll have to remember that one.
