specifying each page number (Microsoft 2003)

I'm working on my dissertation and having problems with page numbers.
For a few of the beginning pages I need to use i, ii, iii... and then
I begin using 1, 2, 3, 4. However I need to start and stop numbering
throughout the paper - for instance, no page number for the beginning
of each chapter, but page numbers for the remaining chapter pages.
I've searched throughout Word for ways to do this, but can't find
anything. I'm guessing that being able to dictate the numbers for
each page is the best and easiest way to do this, but I really don't
know. I'd appreciate any assistance! Thanks!!

No, don't dictate the numbers for each page. Let Word handle it.

For no page number to begin each chapter--use a Next Page section break
to start each chapter. Turn on First Page Header/Footer in each
chapter, and delete the page number from the First Page Header/Footer.
