speech mark - setting

Hi, Im using MS Word 2000 (Sp3 on an XP machine)

When I type in a speech mark (") it doesn't display on screen until I press
a second key
How do I get it to display the speech mark without the second key press
This happens all the time so I'm guessing it's a setting somewhere!

cheers

It seems like you have your keyboard set up for International typing.
If you type a " nothing happens until you type the next character. If
the next character is a space or a consonant it will print the ". If
the next character was a vowel it puts an umlaut over it so that
"e will look like ë. If you want the e without the umlaut type the "
then a space then a vowel. If you want a space after the " then type
the " and then 2 spaces.
If as I assume you are using an international keyboard then you will
have the same condition when you type
', `,~ and several other characters.
good luck.
