Speed problem with 2004?

I was helping someone yesterday test a spreadsheet that selected columns
then exported that information to Word: 2500 rows of data in Excel with
seven columns selected. I tried it two ways:

1. Excel 2001 (OS 9.2.2 on Biege G3 300 MHz with 384 MB)
- 15 minutes completed and properly formatted in Word 2001

2. Excel 2004 (OS X 10.3.4 on eMac 1.25 GHz with 512 MB)
- 1 hour and 22 minutes properly formatted in Word 2004

Any ideas on why the discrepancy between the faster response on a much
slower machine and less RAM and the faster machine with more RAM and
newer software?
