Spell and Grammar Check Dead

Just installed Office 2004. Spell and Grammar check do not function,
except in Notebook View. When I try to check a document, the message
appears "Spelling and Grammar check of selection complete". This occurs
whether I check the document without selecting text or when text is
selected. In addition, the spell check as you type does not work
either. The installation was a standard install, nothing customised.
Any suggestions?

Probably part of your text is set to No Proofing, or the wrong language.
You have to assign a language to the text for Word to spellcheck it.

To test this, with the cursor in a word that isn't being checked, go to
Tools | Language and see what comes up selected.

To assign a language, select all text and use Tools | Language. Click
Default to assign the language to all new documents.

This may have happened if you pasted in some text that was already set to No
Proofing, and then kept hitting enter and typing from that block of text.

Notebook View is not exactly a view, in that it changes documents, so it
probably uses a different text formatting that includes language.

Yes, your tip worked a treat. I opened a new document and wrote some
gibberish (which I do most of the time!). The spell checker gave me the
usual "spell and grammar check complete" message. Then I did exactly
what you suggested. I went to Tools/Language and selected English (UK).
I then ran the Spell checker and I was in business.

Thanks, Daiya, and keep up the good work!
