Spell and Grammar checker in Word 2008 (Mac) not working

I can't do spelling and grammer checks anymore (used to work). I'm using
Office Mac 2008 version 12.1.5 and have English dictionary selected.

When I spellcheck a document it fails to respond to any incorrectly spelled
words (also fails to underline any errors in typed document).

Also the Grammar check options are completely greyed out.

I have "check spelling as you type", "Always suggest corrections", "Ignore
internet and file addresses' and " Use German post-reform rules" ticked.

Below these options the Grammar options sre all completely greyed out.


Any fixes short of a reinstall out there?

I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks
