Spell Check and hidden text

Spell Check simply does not work in some Word 2007 documents. It says that
I've exculded the text from being checked. I've checked Word Options and
Proofing and haven't ticked anything there. Help!

The proofing attribute may be applied individually to every character in
your document. Have you established whether the document has the English
proofing formatting attribute applied? CTRL+A then Review > Set Language.
Apply a language for which you have a spell checker installed and uncheck
both 'do not check spelling or grammar' and 'detect language automatically'.
