When I spell check my Word docs it crashes upon finishing???

That can happen if it has found what it thinks is a spelling error in hidden
text, deleted text, or hidden text in a header or footer.

Any chance it could be that?

No sir. This is in regular text, misspelled words in the body of Normal template document. Doesn't seem to matter what word or what kind.

Hmmm...

And you have replaced your Normal template?

(By first re-naming it, and also re-naming any other copies you might have
of the Normal template from Word X or Word 2004). When Word 2008 creates a
new template, it brings in settings from the previous version of Normal if
it can find it, and they could cause this problem.

Also: Re-name your Custom Dictionary.

Now, try again...

Let me know what happens...

Cheers

Thanks, John!

That's great to know. I have a similar problem, but in my case I am
sure that it has to do with invisible characters. I have tried to
remove some of them by using TextSoap, but I continue to have the
problem. Not only does Word 2008 crash, but I often lose the capacity
to use left and right navigation arrows.

While it's a relief that it's a known issue, I still would love to
know a work-around. Any ideas? Or hints about where to look for
answers?

Thanks!

Hi Bug,

You could have a corrupt document and/or a preference issue and/or various
other things, but let's start with those two.

First, uncorrupt your document: Turn on Show/Hide Formatting (¶), copy all
but the very last paragraph mark and paste into a blank new document window.

Does this happen with *all* documents? If so, it's more likely preferences
or a corrupt Normal template. For the first, see here:
<http://word.mvps.org/Mac/DamagedPrefs.html>. For the second, see here:

If the crashing occurs on launch or quit (it doesn't sound like it, though),
see here: <http://word.mvps.org/mac/Word2008Issues.html>.

Hi,

I can confirm the same behavior but only on documents in Italian (all
of them), works fine with English and German. Installed Office 2008
(removing office 2004) on an iMac G5 with Leopard.
