spell check did not work

I had some very obvious errors in a document and the spell check kept saying
that everything was fine. What causes it to not work sometimes?
Also, In auto correct, I have several of my usual typos in the auto correct
section, but when I make those errors, it doesn't catch them. Is there
something I am supposed to do to make auto correct work?

It sounds as though somehow part of your document is being set to Do Not
Check Spelling or Grammar. To combat this, SelectAll and go to Tools,
Languages, Set Language and make sure that the correct language default is
set, Detect Language Automatically and Do Not Check Spelling options are
CLEAR: then click DEFAULT button. Spelling and grammar should now work OK.
