John Kennedy - new to Macs

My hard drive recently failed and I had to reload Office 2004.

Now the standard spell check does not work at all. However, autocorrect
does. I have looked at all the postings on this I could find and have gone
through the language set for Normal.doc. Still no spell check.

Hello John,

Welcome to the happy world of Mac!

We need more details. Could you let us know how your situation differs from
these recent posts in this group, which from your remarks I assume you would
have read?:

"No Dictionary in Spell Check"
"dictionary/spell checking not functioning"
"How do I get "Add" in Spell check to go from "grey" to "active"

Cheers,

Clive, thanks for the speedy reply.

I have followed all the suggestions given in these posts - to no avail. I
Also, the grammer check section in the preferences for spelling and grammer
is greyed out.

As I said, the autocorrect works on some words, but nothing for misspelled
words - no underlining - and no issues when I run spell check.

The custom dictionary is there - nothing in it, but I know that is not the
issue.

Anything you want me to try?

Best regards
John

Hi John -

Since reinstalling Office have you also applied [at least] the 11.3.5
update? I'd recommend getting all the way up to 11.3.9 if you aren't already
there.

Additionally - although some might say it won't help - running the Repair
Disk Permissions routine in Disk Utility can't hurt.

In addition to what Clive requested it may also be helpful to know what
version of OS X you're running as well as the type of Mac (PPC/Intel) you
have.

I found the fix to the problem in the second link. Under Tools/Language there is a check box to enable spelling and grammar checks. The box was checked for the problem document, 'unchecking' it brought up all the errors that were 'missing' and saved me a lot of retyping [new documents were OK].
I also had to click the Default button on the Tools/Language popup to prevent the from reappearing and turning off the spelling and grammar checks whenever I did a manual spell check.
Thanks greatly. Had worked 2 hours before I found this. Thought I would have to retype document.
Running 2004 on G5 with 10.5.2
