Spell Check doesn't work in Excel

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel When I go to Tools-->Speling... I get a pop up that reads "The word could not be added to the custom spelling dictionary the word contains incorrect characters.".

I've checked the setting in word (as per the help menus) but it doesnt fix the problem. Spell chec k works in Word however I see the same message in a pop up when I open a new word Doc. There does not appear to be any updates for me either.

In Word, open the Preferences and through there, edit the custom dictionary.
Make a slight modification (add a space, then remove it for instance)
then save.
I suspect that the encoding of the dictionary is corrupted and this
trick might correct it.
