spell check,grammar, readability statistics in word 2003 does not

During spell check, the reading statistics is not reporting accurately. Word
count, charater count, paragraph count incorrect, 0 for sentences and
averages, 0 for readability. It is not catching grammar or spelling errors.
I have checked and re-checked the basic settings and can't figure out what is
wrong.

Ctrl+A to select the entire document, then go to Tools | Language | Set
Language and make sure that the correct language is selected and that "Do no
check spelling or grammar" is not checked.
