Spell Check in Word template with Form Fields

It appears that the default for Language + Set Language is Do not check Spelling for form fields and Check Spelling for regular text. This is the opposite of what would be reasonable. When I try to change the form fields to Check spelling..., they remain that way until I protect the template for forms. This causes it to revert to "Do not..." Anybody have any ideas how to correct this?
