athometranscriber

this is the craziest. when i start word application and try to do a spell
check F7 it opens up a save as window, however, when i bring up a document
that i previously typed and use that the spell check works. when the save as
screen comes up and i cancel it says run time error 4198. any help would be
appreciated.

It sounds like you may have a template or add-in that has reassigned
the F7 key to a macro (and a clumsily programmed macro at that).

Here's how to find out if I'm right: Open the Tools > Customize dialog
and click the Keyboard button. Put the cursor in the "Press new
shortcut key" box. Press the F7 key. Below the box, the phrase
"Currently assigned to:" will appear, followed by the name of the
command assigned to the key. If it isn't "ToolsProofing", it may be a
three-part name that shows the template, module, and macro.

You can select "All Commands" on the left and "ToolsProofing" on the
right, put the cursor in the "Press new shortcut key" box, press the
F7 key, and click the Assign button to restore the original function.
