What are the symptoms?

Start a new document.

Type:

Thiss iz a teest.

Are any of those words flagged as misspelled?

If not, then click the Office button (upper left corner of the Word window),
Word Options, Proofing tab, and ensure that Check spelling as you type is
enabled, and that "Hide spelling errors..." is NOT enabled. Do the errors
show up now?

If not, press F7. What does Word say?

It says: Cannot find the proofing tools...try re-installing them...

tried that yesterday...no result...when I tried it said it was already
installed...

Thanks

On the status bar, what language does it say is associated with the text? If
it's not English US (assuming that's where you are), then press Ctrl+A and
set the text to English. Does it work now?

If not... try starting Word in Safe mode. Does it work then? (To start in
Safe mode, hold down Ctrl while Word is starting, then click to the Safe
mode prompt.)

Hi Herb,

Nope...tried it in the safe mode...English US is the default and has a tick
on the language listing...(English - UK is not ticked and that is the one I
need)...but I did try English US to no avail...French and Spanish in their
various forms are ticked
Maybe it all went wrong when there was an update and I didn't notice until
now..

Thanks

My next suggestion would be to try doing a repair on the installation. This
is done from Control Panel - Programs and Features.

If that doesn't work... my next suggestion would be to log onto Vista as a
new user, and see if the new user has the same problem.

By the way... does your default user profile have Administrator status? If
not, what happens if you run Word as an Administrator? Does it work then?

Also... it it just Word, or is spelling broken in Excel, PowerPoint,
Outlook, etc., as well?

Spelling does not work for Power Point or Exel yet when I tried other users
as you suggested it was fine for them...now it's more puzzling...

Couldn't see Office or word in the Programmes and Features...

thanks....Off to bed now I'll puzzle again in the morning..

Okay. This suggests that your profile has become corrupted. I've never
succeeding in repairing a broken profile... please let me know if you
discover a solution other than beginning afresh with a new user profile.

For not seeing Office or Word in Programmes and Features... that's rather
odd. Look for "Microsoft Office..." rather than "Office" or "Word".
