T
The Monger
On a new Vista Ultimate 64 PC, I installed Office Professional 2007 (upgrade,
I think I had to pop in the original discs to confirm), and the spell check
does not work in Word or any other application and has never worked. I get
no error messages at all, but nothing works. I've checked many other posts
here and elsewhere, and ALL of the application check boxes are correctly
checked (Word Options/Proofing/"Check Spelling as you type" is checked for
example), so that's not the issue. I've changed languages, and set them
back, as others suggested. I've run a Repair on Office, and I've set the
proofing tools in the Office installation to run on first use rather than
from the computer, and then tried invoking them to trick the machine, but
that didn't work either.
In checking the register (which I barely understand BTW) for
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Shared Tools/Proofing
Tools/1.0/Override/en-US as suggested in a number of places, I find two
entries for DLL and LEX that point to a file location for MSSPELL3.DLL and
MSSP3EN.LEX. However, in checking I find that while I have 25 files in that
location starting with "MS", I don't have the two referenced files. I do see
a number of .LEX files that Explorer says are dictionary files, and a number
of DLL files, but they look like they might be French and Spanish files from
their file names. A search of my hard drive does not turn up the two files
anywhere else, either. I can see some sites where they can be downloaded,
but I'm reluctant to grab them because I don't know how reliable the sites
are. I didn't see them on Microsoft's site.
So what I'm guessing MIGHT be happening is that either I'm missing the files
I should have, or I'm pointing to old files and just need to update the
registry to point to the correct files. However, I'm extremely reluctant to
mess around with the registry in this way until I get some corroboration.
Also, I can't be the only person having this problem.
Any suggestions? Many thanks!
