spell check not working in parts of document

the spell check is not working in parts of my document - it appears turned on
in the quick access toolbar and the proofing part of Word options. It even
claims that Adsafgfafdg is spelled correctly when I spell check it. What
gives??

Ctrl+A to select the entire document. Then go to Tools | Language | Set
Language and completely clear the check box for "Do not check spelling or
grammar."

With the cursor in some word that should be flagged but isn't, click the
Review tab and then click the Set Language button in the Proofing group (the
one with a green globe and a red check mark). You'll probably find that the
"Do not check spelling and grammar" option in the dialog is checked.

If that's the case, close the dialog, select everything (Ctrl+A), go back
into the dialog, and clear that option -- don't leave it with a check or a
green square. Click OK. In Word Options > Proofing, click the Recheck
Document button to turn up the misspellings.

I find no green globe with a red check but do have the same problem but my
computer says can not check spelling because an error has occured.

That's something different. You wouldn't get any error message if the text
was marked "Do not check spelling and grammar"; it would just say that some
text had been skipped.

Try repairing your installation -- go to Office button > Word Options >
Resources and click the Diagnose button.

If that doesn't help, post back and quote the _exact_ wording of the error
message.
