Spell check not working

Hello!

I have Word XP and it works fine for my documents, but the spell checker
does not work on a document that a friend sent to me. If I cut his text,
paste it into Notepad, and then cut/paste it into a NEW Word doc, spell
check works fine. It just will not work on his Word doc when I open it.
There was a setting that was checked to hide spelling errors (Tools,
Options, Spelling and Grammar, Hide spelling errors in this document), but
spell check fails even withat box cleared.

How can I get spell check to work on his doc?

Check the language settings (Ctrl+A to select all, then choose Tools -
Language - Set Language... exact commands depend on the version of Word). It
might be set to No Proofing or Do Not Check..., or to an unsupported
language.
