Standard fixes for missing menu commands:

Make sure you didn't accidentally turn on "Word 5.1 Menus". Look under
View to see if there's a check next to that option. If that isn't the
problem:

If you go to Tools | Customize Toolbars/Menus, select the Menu Bar, and
click Reset, it should set all your main menus and built-in toolbars
back to the default.

If you have customized your menus or toolbars, you may want to explore
the Tools | Customize, Commands dialog, and drag the commands you are
missing back to the toolbars/menus yourself, rather than wipe out your
customizations by clicking Reset.

many may thanks, I have added the spelling and grammar command dragging it from the Customize command... Unfortunately when I select Spelling and Grammar I am told that the function is not installed in my computer. Is that any way that I can download that feature for free?
Very strange it does not come by default!

thanks again

It does come by default. What version of Word are you using? What's the
exact error message you get?

B

It sais "This command is not available because the spelling checker and the grammar checker are not installed in your computer".

as for the version, it is Word X for Mac.

many thaks!

Okay.

Are you typing in English?

Put the cursor in a word that isn't being checked. Go to Tools |
Language. What comes up highlighted?

B

it indicates I am using UK English ( and that's the language I am using). I even tried to set it as US English ... just in case.... but it sends out the same error message.

Huh. Look in Applications/Microsoft Office X/Shared
Applications/Proofing Tools (I think that's the right location). If you
don't see English tools there, you can try installing them--you'll need
the Office X install CD--use the custom installer, and I think proofing
tools might be buried in the Value Pack.

But I didn't think it was possible to *not* install the English tools.
Is this a new problem? new program? new installation? did this use to work?

well many thanks again. i don't even find the Shared applications folder you mention, and my install CD was stolen last year along with my suitcase.

I do not think it ever worked, I have not used word much though, as i used to work on another computer before...

it is pretty depressing because i seem to "contract" the worst problems with this mac.
thanks for all your help anyways...

Sorry, then. It sounds like they are really not installed, and you'd
need your CD (or borrow a friend's) to install them.

You can download NeoOffice for free, or TextEdit should have come with
the computer.

Actually, wait a bit--if you don't even see Shared Applications, then I
may have the location wrong--I don't have Office X, that's the Office
2004 location. Search the Office X folder for a folder named Proofing
Tools, to make sure they are really not there.

This post did help me, I was finally able to get my spelling/grammar back by removing the Proofing Tools folder, reinstalling spelling from the CD, then after verifying success, adding in my other tools.

Thanks for the clues!
