How do you set spell check up so that it functions automatically

That should be how it works by default. However, if it somehow go
turned off...

In Word 2003 or earlier, go to Tools > Options > Spelling & Grammar
and check the first box, "Check spelling as you type".

In Word 2007, go to Office button > Word Options > Proofing and check
the same box, which is in the middle of the dialog.
