spell check

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I am using a template from another program was .doc and every time i attempted to spell check i get msg saying the language box is checked not to check
so I uncheck it and it still wont check says it all checked then back to beginning
I have re saved it as .docx but this didn't help please HELP

Language is a formatting attribute, so if you select no text neither
removing checkmarks nor anything else will change the current setting.
