Spell Check

Hi, we're an International School and we often have exams on Word processing.

We're using Windows XP Pro (SP2) and Office XP

My question is, can we totally uninstall Spell check and Grammar check on
Microsoft Office ?

or does anyone know where Microsoft Office is getting those dictionary from,
can i just temporarily remove any files from c:\program files\Microsoft
Office... that's providing dictionary ...

This is because the user (the students) can still re-enable the Spell &
Grammar check from Tools > Options > Spelling & Grammar tab.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Do you mean you have exams on word processing, composition or just
typing? If truly on word processing, then spelling and grammar
checking is built into all modern, full-function word processors
(there are others besides MSFT Word). Knowing how to use those
features and using them properly should be allowed.

OTOH, for composition or plain typing, have the students use WordPad.

Alternatively, on the exam machines remove the Macro, Customize and
Options commands from Word's Tools menu via Tools > Customize, and use
a DocumentOpen application event handler to run OnKey to bind [Alt]+
[F8] and [Alt]+[F11] key combinations to a common macro that e-mails
the instructor and administrators that the student is attempting to
cheat. With this configuration, they can't change settings, can't
change the menu, and can't use VBA (unless they're really clever and
use other programs with scripting capabilities to reset Word's menu to
its default state via OLE automation).

It's easy just upgrade to Office 2007 and it will wipe out all spell
checkers. an inferior product will do the trick

Not really, only in Outlook Express. (Which I think Microsoft should do
something about instead of merely ignoring the issue, but don't get me
started on that topic. ;-) )

Then if you are encountering loss of spell check in the Office apps that's
not typical. :) Here's the current resolution:

If no custom spell checker have been installed on the computer, exit all
Office applications, and then backup and delete the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared
Tools\ProofingTools\1.0\Override\en-US

This key will be rebuilt the next time you start an Office application.

Sure, here are the specific instructions:

- Exit all Office applicaitons
- Go to Start/Run
- Type: regedit and click OK
- iIn the Registry, click the plus (+) next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- Click the plus (+) next to Software
- Do the same for the following, (click the + next to) Microsoft, Shared
Tools, Proofing Tools, 1.0, and Override
- Cliik en-US (to select the key)
- From the File menu, click Export. Provide any file name and location for
the key to make a backup copy of it (You can skip this step if you want
since this key is self-repairing - a new one will be generated
automatically)
- From the Edit menu, click Delete
- Exit the Registry and see if your spell check works
