spell checker doesn't always work

Here's a puzzler: I've had this problem under both Win 98
and XP ...

Spell checker only works on some documents, not others.
Right now, with the latest update on Word 2002, I can
open a new document, type in a misspelled word, and Word
will not catch it. I select the word and ask Word to
check it, and Word says it's fine.

What gives? Why will Word correctly spell check some
documents and not others? Why would this occur over
multiple versions of Word?

PLEASE, somebody, HELP!

Check your custom dictionary and autocorrect entries to see if at some time
you had okayed the misspellings.

Milly, I can type any "garbage" in I want, and Word still
tells me that the spelling check is complete, without
finding that the garbage was a misspelling of anything!

Have you checked the language? Select the document, go to
Tools/Language/Set Language and verify it is set to the correct
language and make sure "Do not check spelling or grammar" is turned
off.
