Spell checker finds errors but gives no suggestions

Word 2003 (11.6359.6360) SP1

Word has stopped giving suggestions for the correct spelling of words
found to be incorrectly spelled. The suggestions area is empty. How do
I fix this?

Try TOOLS > OPTIONS > SPELLING & GRAMMAR and select the options best suited
to your requirements - including 'Always suggest corrections."

It doesn't stick!

Yes, your suggestion works, but it does not stick. I have two
computers and on both I have to go in and change it every time I want
to use that feature.
How do I make it stick???
