spell checker German doesn't work

O

Olli. B.

Reinstalled Win2k and Office Premiu in English.
Need spell checker in German.
Visited sites and discussion groups.
Downloaded msgr3ge, msgrge32, mssp3ge, mssp232.dlls
Placed them in various folders: WinNt system and C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof.

Nonetheless Word tells me: Word cannot find the grammar file ... in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof It is in there!

Do I need to change a Registry entry or where is my mistake?
It worked before, then I had to reformat C:, reinstall and now no more.

Thanx for your help and advise.

Oliver

Hi Oliver,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicatd the Spell Checker does not
work.

Based on our research and experience, this behavior can occur if any one of
the following conditions is true:

1. The value data for the SharedFilesDir registry value does not contain a
trailing backslash \ in the following registry key (that is, there should
be a backslash immediately after Shared Tools):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools

Absence of this trailing backslash prevents location of the Csapi3t1.dll
file and causes the spelling checker not to function properly.

2. The Csapi3t1.dll file, which is located in the Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof folder, is missing or damaged.

Step one: Check Csapi3t1.dll
========================

Please also double check to verify the Csapi3t1.dll is in c:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof folder

Step two: Check registry value
==========================

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

a. Click Start, click Run, type Regedt32 in the Open box and then click OK.

b. Double-click to expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools

c. Double-click to expand the Shared Tools folder, and then click the
SharedFilesDir value.

d. On the Edit menu, click Modify.

e. Type C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ in the Value Data
box, and then click OK.

f. Quit Registry Editor.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian

Hi Olli,

The English language edition of MS Office 2000
did not include a German language spell checker
and it appears that MS has discontinued distribution
of the Office 2000 Proofing Tools Kit,
http://microsoft.com/office/previous/deployment/worldwide/proofing.asp
that would add that feature although you may be able to find it
available via a web search.
