Spell checker turns itself off

MS Word 2002 (10.2627.2625). Tools | Options | Spelling and Grammar.
"Check spelling as you type" & "Always suggest corrections" are both
checked in the document and in the template. Tools | Language | Set
Language | Language dialog. "Do not check spelling or grammar" check
box is clear. Yet suddenly and repeatedly spell checking stops and
"Check spelling as you type" & "Always suggest corrections" & "Do not
check spelling or grammar" check boxes are all clear in the document.

Anyone know what's happening?
