Hello,

My keyboard settings are set on Swiss French. When I create a new Word document the spell checking for the fench language doesn't work automatically. I am obliged to go into the menu Tools -> Language and select French and set it as default.

I replace the normal.dot tamplate but "french" is not the default proofin language.

What must I do? Is it possible to edit Word preferences files?
Is there a way to edit Normal.dot

Thanks for any help.

Hi Andrew,
My keyboard settings are set on Swiss French. When I create a new Word
document the spell checking for the fench language doesn't work
automatically. I am obliged to go into the menu Tools -> Language and
select French and set it as default.

I suspect it is related to a nasty bug where Word uses the inpout method
selected in order to determine the default language. A major PITA as far
as I am concerned.
I was sort of hoping it had been corrected.
Is your version of Office perfectly up to date??

Hi,

Yes my Office Mac 2008 is up to date, version 12.1.7.

What is strange is that this problem occurs only on this particular machine....

If you chose the French keyboard layout do you still have the problem??
(I know it's not a practical option, but it would let you test what's
causing this).

Have you tried disabling the Preferences->Edit->Match font with keyboard option?

This particular option appears to also control the spelling language of the text.

Hello Corentin,

I can confirm what you asked me. When I change the keyboard to French, the automatic gramar spelling correction works just fine.

I gave you a wrong information. I said that this problem occured only on a particular machine. This is not true. It happens on a lot of machines I administer.

But with Entourage, I dont have this problem...

Is there a fix for this issue?

Is Microsoft aware of the bug?

Hello ScottH,

I tried to uncheck Preferences->Edit->Match font with keyboard, restared Word and created a new document, but the problem is still present.

Is there something I can edit in the Normal.dot document to force the language to french?

What exactle is this option Match font with keyboard?

Hello Corentin,

Yeah, nasty bug, what a pain!! I had hopes it had been fixed :-\
I gave you a wrong information. I said that this problem occured only on

That's what I feared.
But with Entourage, I dont have this problem...

Well ENtourage is a different beast. It doesn't suport languages for
spell checking the same way Word does.

They are sure aware of it. I was under the impression it had been fixed
but obviously I was wrong (assuming that all your Mac are indeed runngin
12.1.7)

Well open the Normal template, select all and use Tools>Languages to set
it to French, then save.

In theory it *should* work, but here I don;t know,
What exactle is this option Match font with keyboard?

It's a different thing. I beleive it has been created for people using
different alphabets. eg; it switches to a Russian font if it detects
that you are using the Russian keyboard layout,
It shouldn't be related to spell checking,

Hi Corentin,

I tried changing the Normal.dotm template but it doesn't work.
I have the exact same problem.
Anyway, thanks a lot for your help.

Do you have a way to put pressure on Microsoft to correct this issue?
Is there an "open bug" database users can look at?

No database you can look at. I can assure you that they are aware of the
issue though.
If you want to "pressure" them, use the Send Feedback button on the Help
menu in Word to let them know how it affects you.
You can also ask your friends to do the same :->

The more they hear about it, the more likely they are to prioritize it
for later updates.
