Spell checking in British English

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Since I've installed the software, I've had problems with the spell check. I want the dictionary set to British English, but it sometimes changes to Australian English all on its own! I also get massages telling me that the custom dictionary is not available. Can anyone please tell me in a step by step guide that even an idiot like me can understand how I can get Word to check all my documents in British English?
As it is just now, I use the spell check and then I have to read every word in the document to ensure its not left any errors!

Keep in mid that spell-checking is done based on the language *formatting*
of the text involved... And any document may contain a mix of language
formatting depending on the creator & source of the content. If the text is
formatted as US English that's the dictionary the checker uses, not the the
dictionary you tell it to use.

Likewise, if your custom dictionary is marked as one language any content
formatted as a different language can't be added to it.

that seems to be very helpful..... one last point....

Is there anything that can be done about the annoying message stating, "the custom dictionary, 'custom dictionary' can't be accessed"?

Yes: Fix the custom dictionary :)

Open it, make a change, and re-save it. That should fix it.

Make sure the Custom Dictionary is set to "No Language" so it matches the
text whichever language the text is marked in.
