Spell+Grammar check doesn't work

N

For some reason Word says Spelling + Grammar check is complete while
there are errors and proper names in my text file. In the preferences
menu the grammar check part is grey and cannot be activated. My old
files work normally but after a while they also stop functionning. I
threw away the preferences but nothing happened. Then I re-installed
the software by removing the file Office X but then again nothing
happened. Maybe I should remove other components too. This happens
with French and Italian texts while the dictionaries etc are
installed. I find weird the fact it says the check is complete. Any
help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Okay, first of all, re-installing does *not* fix problems unless you run the
Remove Office tool first. Directions here:

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)
You probably ought to do that now, as reinstalling over a partial uninstall
just creates a mess.
For files to back up first, see here:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/backupprefs.htm
Although you will not want to reinstall all of them, as some are corrupted,
sounds like.

That you are having problems with French and Italian suggests you may not be
updated, as one of the Office X updates included fixes to those tools.
See here for directions and best practice tips on updating.

(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Others have reported S&G preferences being grayed out, but the standard
fixes usually take care of it.

Another cause for not reporting errors is that the text is not properly
tagged with the correct language. To test this, with the cursor in a word
that isn't being checked, go to Tools | Language and see what comes up
selected.

To assign a language, select all text and use Tools | Language.

If this happens in multiple documents, you may need to use a style-based
solution instead of the manual formatting solution given above. Post back
if so.
