Spellcheck (and other) errors - Error 1606

I have a new computer running Windows XP Professional (not networked). I
have installed Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003. When I try to run
Spellcheck (and sometimes other options), I get this error message in a box:

"Microsoft Office Word can't check the spelling or grammar in this document.
Microsoft Office Word cannot install the necessary files due to Wiondows
Installer error 1606. Feature ID not registered."

When I try to click the OK in the box, or the X to exit out of the box, it
just keeps giving me the same box. After 7-8 clicks, I get another error
message:

"Cannot find proofing tools for English (U.S). If you have proofing tools,
try installing or reinstalling them. Contact your locaql reseller to obtain
Office Proofing Tools."

I have received the Windows Installer 1606 message when trying to access
Word's Help menu too.

How can I fix these problems?

Mary,

Did you ever find out how to solve this? Have almost the same porblem and
every post in the error 1606 refers to installation problems and not the
"feature ID not registered' problem I (and you) have.
thanks, Brian

Brian, I never got a response to the inquiry. Someone at my husband's IT
dept. suggested having the installation CD in the drive when I get they
error, to see if it would search out and install whatever is (supposedly)
missing. I did that and it didn't seem to make any difference.

I have found that if I click the X enough times, it eventually goes away and
the software SEEMS to work as it's supposed to -- but who knows?

Mary
