I have recently brought a mac laptop with microsoft officce installed
but when I go to click the spellcheck icon it says that the
spellchecck facility is not installed.
Is there a way to install it from the web or something? Help will be
much appreciated.

Hi Matt:

Give us the exact wording of the error message, please.

It is quite unlikely that the Spelling Checker is not "installed", but there
are various things that may prevent it from "working" that we will be able
to help you fix. But we need the exact wording of the error message to
determine which of those problems you have.

If the Spelling Checker really is not installed, the only solutionis to do a
full Remove Office then re-install the product from the CD. There's no
place you can download separate components of it.

The original owner of the product should have provided the CD with you when
he provided the software. He must either give you the full product, or
remove the software from the machine before he sells it to you. He's not
allowed to keep using a copy and sell you a copy! He knows that! If he's
'forgotten', it's written right there in his End User Licence so he can
refresh his memory :) If he hasn't done so, he has broken the terms of his
licence agreement with Microsoft. You could remind him of that, and ask for
the disk and licence key that are rightfully now yours (or insist that he
return the amount that you notionally "paid" for the product). Might be
worth a try :)

Hope this helps

Hi, the exact message is "This command is not available becasue the
spell checker is not installed on your computer".

If it needs re installing then that is no problem becasue i can get
the disk becasue it was a family member who gave me the laptop so
there is no problem of getting it back. It will just take a few weeks
though so i was jsut wondering if there was a quicker way that i could
do it.

Hi Matt:

There is no quicker way of getting the software: it's a module that is
installed during the installation of Mac Office 2004.

You MUST do a full removal of the software by running the Remove Office
utility, then do a re-install. If you do not remove first, you will get
things into a horrible knot and we'll be here for a couple of weeks chasing
the various problems :)

The software is a set of modules that hangs together by pointers that
indicate where everything is on the disk, and these pointers are contained
in preference files. If the preference files and the inventory of modules
on the disk get out of step, all hell breaks loose.

I cannot believe that anyone would "remove" the Spelling checker (and it's
not an optional component). So you might like to ring the original owner
and ask if they did anything suspicious to the computer that could be the
cause of this.

Particularly: Ask them if they ever ran a utility named "Monolingual".
This is the sort of damage that crazy piece of bug-ware causes :)

Cheers
