Spellcheck selections misfunction in W7

I am using Word 2002 in Windows 7.

When I tell the spellchecker to "ignore" certain words it considers
misspelt it does so. But when I save that document and later reopen it
on the same PC the same words are again flagged as misspelled. The same
thing happens when I set a different language for certain words. The
setting is retained while the document is open but these settings are
lost in the document in question after saving and reopening. (Additions
to the dictionary do work correctly)

This is new behavior in W7. It did not happen when I used Word 2002 in
XP. Is this a known problem or is there a Word setting I need to change
somewhere?

I don't think the "ignore" setting has ever survived closing and reopening
(or quitting and restarting Word), but applying language formatting to a
Word should certainly "take."

You can certainly force Word to "ignore" certain words by applying a
character style defined as "Do not check spelling or grammar." See

Thank you. Will explore the character style.

Language formatting will just not stick after restarts. I know, I've
had to redo it several times before giving up and going to ignore which
as you say does not stick either.

Created the style and added it to the customized toolbar. Great Idea!

BTW, detect language also does not work any longer in Word 2002 when
installed in W7. It may be part of the same problem that prevents the
language setting from sticking after closing the document. Possibly
something to do with the permissions in W7.

I always advise people to disable "Detect language automatically." Word has
never been good at this, and it usually just causes problems.

It *does* work correctly in Word 2000 (!) under XP! Seems to me that
surviving closing and reopening is essential for its proper working. I could
not imagine haveing to recheck a long document that I've already plastered
with 'ignoreds' every time I reopened it to work on it. (On the other hand I
think it is excellent practice to do the final check by selecting receheck
and thus removing the 'accepts'.)

Agaian, this does work with Word 2000 on XP. Two more reasons now why I'm
glad I've stuck with them.

Apologies all for my constant sloppy checking spelling before posting! I
have developed the apalling habit of checking my work *after* sending it!
