In the middle of editing a PowerPoint slide show, spellchecker stopped
working. It continues to work normally in all other Office programs, but not
in PowerPoint. Spell check still works in new PowerPoint documents, but it
has ceased working in my current document.
I tried the registry edit fix (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\
Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override), but the key does not exist. I
moved to a different machine, and it too had the same problem when the
PowerPoint document was opened up.
This problem is occurring from some sort of corruption in the specific
document. No errors or warning or alerts are ever displayed. Saving the
document as a new file does not correct the problem.
I noticed this problem in a large number of forums online, so I did further
investigation on my own:
1.) I tried disabling all spell check settings, restarting the machine,
returning the spell checking options back to normal, restart, and opening the
document - still the same affect.
2.) I've tried the document on 3 machines, all with Vista & Office 2007 -
spell check fails to work in the specific document on any machine.
3.) For new documents and previous documents, spell check works fine. This
implies the problem is with the file and not the installation of Office.
I went through and made obvious typos on each slide with the following
results...
1.) In rare instances, the red squiggle sometimes appear after a spell
check, but they will only appear for one slide. They will not appear on other
slides.
2.) For some slides, red squiggles do not appear and spell checking works if
you manually launch it from the review tab or by pressing F7.
3.) For some slides, red squiggles do not appear and spell checking does not
work if you manually launch it from the review tab or by pressing F7.
4.) For some slides listed in #3, if you have a textbox selected, and that
text box contains a typo, and then you hit F7 - the spell checker works. But
it only works for that text box, and it will not catch errors in any other
pages or textboxes.
5.) For some slides listed in #4, the spell checker will find the first typo
in the text box, but it will fail to find any additional typos within that
text box
