spellchecker

Hi,

I am writing a large document (my thesis) that contains lots of
scientific words. When I use the Word:mac v.X spellchecker, it finds
all of these new words, but it won't let me add them to my custom
dictionaray - the 'Add' button is greyed out.

If I'm in the 'Spelling and Grammar' window and click 'options' and then
'Dictionaries...', I get a list of the three Custom Dictionaries I've
created, and the two correct ones are selected. But the 'Edit' button
in this window is greyed out. Why can't Word use them ? Another
oddity: Although I've selected 'English (UK)' for the Custom
Dictionaries, the 'Spelling and Grammar' window says 'English (US)'.

BTW, I've unselected most of the autocorrect functions.

Does my problem sound familiar to anyone ? Any tips how to make this
work would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks in advance,
Karen

It means the dictionnary is not available.

Here is the problem. You created a custom dictionary for UK English but
your document is in US English.
You then have two options: keep on writing in US English and create a
custom dictionary for this language or change the language of the
document to UK English.

If youwant to switch all new documents to UK English automatically, you
can open the Normal template, select all, change the language to UK
English and then save.
New documents are based on this template and should then all be in UK
English.

BTW, I've unselected most of the autocorrect functions.

Let me know if it works.

Hi Corentin,

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I've checked the normal style
of my document and normal template - both are already set to English(UK).
What else could it be ?

Really weird... I've never seen that before. It has always worked
perfectly for me.
Can you send me your template on (e-mail address removed) ??? I'd like to test
it on my system to see what I get.

Thank you for your offer ! I've just given it another shot, and I seem
to have cracked it. Apparently, *parts* of my document were set to US
English. Don't ask me how it got that way, but selecting all and
choosing the Language in Tools did the trick. Which is more or less
what you've proposed in your first reply. So thank you again !! This
makes my life A LOT easier.
