Spelling and Grammar Dimmed in Preferences

For some reason all of a sudden my Word documents do not have spelling and grammar running. I did not choose to make any change, and in Preferences this area is dimmed, so that I cannot edit it. I want this to be running as I work. What should I do to get it to be selectable again?
Thanks,
Mark

Make sure your text is set to be in English (or whatever other suported
language you want) and it shouldn't be dimmed anymore,

Thanks Corentin. My Macbook is set to US Extended already, but the problem remains. Or am I misunderstanding you? Any other suggestion?

I suspect you are talking about the input method (settings for your
keyboard).
I was referring to the selection made for the text in Word (you could use a
US keyboard and write in a paragraph set for French for instance).

What does it say if you select the paragraph and use Tool > Language for
instance? Is US English selected??
I *suspect* that a language for which you do not have proofing tools (or
"none") is selected. That would at least explain a lot,

Thank you again. When I check language in Tools, yes, it has English selected, so unfortunately that is not the problem. Any other suggestions?

Check the preferences to see if there is anything odd, other than that, it
could be a corrupted preference file. I sure have never experienced that
myself,
